Mecanismo Exclusive Interview

Mecanismo is the result of the combination of a profound interest in materials and care for the execution of projects, with the obsession for investigation and innovation of new concepts.

It is an architecture studio located in Madrid, founded by Marta Urtasun and Pedro Rica, two young architects with a dynamic and different vision of architecture and its processes, that have succeeded in achieving a unique and own line of work, directly associated to the importance of details and conceptual innovation. Today, integrated by a nurtured team of young professionals specialized in the design, development and execution of projects, systems and architectural products, mecanismo focuses its activity to edification and to singular design.

The work of mecanismo in the development of projects comprehends the control of the whole process, from the initial conceptualization to the design of the last detail; at every different stage of the project. This labor entails a precise coordination of everyone that intervenes at every phase and thorough control of the execution, and results in a coherent, harmonic and functional architecture.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A DESIGNER TODAY?

Life is a design; our surroundings are all designs that affect society. Firstly, by the functionality and the adequate use and secondly by the aesthetic of symbolism, both components affect society directly.  In addition, a designer has the influence on society by creating spaces and places we occupy and things we use. Throughout the history, most powerful societies and organizations have used the shape and symbolism to exert influence and power on their surroundings.

However, today, thanks to the globalization and new media, the design has lost symbolism and it has become more eclectic, giving designers the opportunity to develop new ideas and concepts. In addition, the symbolism, image and layout today need to be flexible, Also it has to have ability to adapt to current changes in the society.

CAN YOU TELL US THE CREATIVE PROCESS BEHIND YOUR WORKS? WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATIONS?

In our creative processes we aim to tell a story, which combines the client’s dreams or expectations with a more conceptual and functional side of the project.

One of our inspirations comes from some creative areas like gastronomy and fashion that need lower investment to generate creative processes. These activities have achieved to involve the client and make him feel part of the process and the experience. We think that in architecture where the projects and the relationship with the client are longer, it is more important to captivate him and make him enjoy the project development.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN DREAM?

We would like to design something, an object or a space; which could have a great influence on society without an expiration date.

YOUR FAVOURITE DESIGNER OF ALL TIME? OR AT LEAST THE ONE THAT YOU LOOK UP TO WHEN YOU ARE WORKING ON YOUR PROJECT?

Today, consumption patterns have changed due to technology and globalization, this has contributed to new scopes and due to this we currently have no favourite designer but we are interested in looking for interesting processes or design techniques regardless of their author

However, in the past there was no information available, and the recognition of those architects  or designers who created outstanding pieces were identified through their work, such is the case of the Hightech in the 80’s and the american architecture of the Mid-century.

WHAT ARE YOUR PROJECTS FOR THE FUTURE?

More than just a concrete design, our project for the future is to advance our way of thinking in order to create and apply this thought to future projects.
