SERGIO MANNINO STUDIO A SOUVENIR FOR NEW YORK: A NEW APPROACH TO MEMORY-MAKING

Sergio Mannino Studio  Established in 2008, Sergio Mannino Studio is an architectural branding agency specializing in retail, residential, interior, and furniture for both private and commercial environments. The studio is based in New York, but recognized internationally, having completed several projects in China, Italy, Canada, and across the United States. Headed by Sergio Mannino himself, the committed team is made up of professional architects, interior designers, graphic designers, and branding consultants. SM Studio is motivated by the desire to create spaces that synthesize creativity, excitement, and functionality – blending classic Italian design with contemporary flair. Although the studio was established as a primarily retail design company, in recent years, they have been involved in a broad range of residential, branding, and furniture design projects. The studio’s clients include Prada, Lexus, Kensiegirl, Miss Sixty, Miu Miu, Vince Camuto, Bottega Veneta, among others. Work by the studio has been widely published in magazines, books, and blogs throughout Europe, China, and the US.
Souvenirs often follow predictable patterns. They are mass-produced objects, usually made of plastic, that accumulate in drawers or end up as waste. This project challenges that approach, offering a way to create a truly personal souvenir while trying to reduce waste.

Instead of producing new objects, we propose a system of vinyl decals designed to be applied to vintage finds sourced from New York’s flea markets and secondhand shops. A simple process transforms an ordinary glass, plate, or ceramic piece into a unique memory of the city. The result is a one-of-a-kind souvenir that carries both the history of its original form and the personal story of its selection and customization.

This idea moves beyond traditional souvenir production by minimizing waste, avoiding plastic, and encouraging a more thoughtful connection between people and the objects they take home.
Our souvenir is about the experience of finding, choosing, and making—turning an everyday act into something memorable.

The second edition of xSouvenir will be held during New York Design Week at the Canvas Gallery at Oculus.
Envisioned and designed by Boym Partners, the show gathers work from 72 designers, each invited to capture a slice of New York’s restless character in a single, collectible object.
